Problem: So many books, so little time.
I have dozens and dozens of “samples” loaded into my iPad Kindle app. I love the “samples” feature. It gives me a feel for the content of so many books. And my friend and blogging colleague Bob Morris shares quite a few books with me. It is wonderful.
But, now, the stack on my shelf, the stack on my little reading table, the “stack” in my iPad is sort of like The Blob (The Blob: An alien lifeform consumes everything in its path as it grows and grows), always advancing, growing larger by the minute. I’m about to be consumed by this blob of books….Aaghhhh…
You can’t help me, but I can offer a little help to you. Since April, 1998, Karl Krayer and I have presented synopses of best-selling, useful, important business books at the First Friday Book Synopsis in Dallas. We record these presentations, and many of our synopses are available for your purchase at our companion site, 15minutebusinessbooks.com. Each synopsis comes with a handout, and the audio of our 15 minute presentation. (OK – many of them go about 17 minutes, with an occasional 18-20 minute presentation).
Many coaches are now playing these recordings for their clients. They have discovered that they are extremely useful in tackling a specific issue, and jumpstarting important conversations.
Listening to one of our synopses, while following along with the handout is, or course, not as good as reading the book. But, it is really, genuinely helpful.

NOTE/WARNING: IF YOU HAVE NEVER ORDERED FROM US, please read the FAQs. Some of the recordings are a little old, and though they are understandable, they are not as “easy” to understand as the newer recordings from the last 2-3 years of presentations.
I promise you, these presentations will help you in your quest to keep learning; they will give you enough of the key content of the books that you can begin thinking about the “what do I do now with what I have just learned?” question; and they will help you know which books will be most valuable for you to read in their entirety.

We had a wonderful gathering this morning for the September First Friday Book Synosis. Karl Krayer presented the best-seller, Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose by Tony Hsieh (of Zappos fame). I presented the provocative book The Great Reset: How New Ways of Living and Working Drive Post-Crash Prosperity by Richard Florida. For next month, October 1 (the First Friday of October), we have chosen these two books:
The Way We’re Working Isn’t Working: The Four Forgotten Needs That Energize Great Performance by Tony Schwartz, Jean Gomes, Catherine McCarthy Ph.D. (synopsis to be presented by Karl Krayer).
The Power of Positive Deviance: How Unlikely Innovators Solve the World’s Toughest Problems by Richard Pascale, Jerry Sternin, Monique Sternin. (I will present this synopsis).
In his review of the Schwartz book on our blog (read his full review here), Bob Morris wrote this:
Schwartz suggests that there are four categories of energy needs that must be accommodated for people to work at their best: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Only by fulfilling these generic needs can we fulfill corresponding needs: sustainability, security, self-expression, and significance. The illustration of all this on Page 9 bears at least some resemblance to Abraham Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs.”
And in his review of The Power of Positive Deviance (read his full review here), Bob Morris wrote this:
As for “positive deviance,” Richard Pasquale, Jerry Sternin, and Monique Sternin explain it as an awkward, oxymoronic term. “The concept is simple: look for outliers who succeed against all odds…The basic premise is this: (1) Solutions to seemingly intractable problems already exist, (2) they have been discovered by members of the community itself, and (3) these innovators (individual positive deviants) have succeeded even though they share the same constraints and barriers as others.”

Books are the carriers of civilization. Without books, history is silent, literature dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill.
Every now and then, I think it is good to remind our readers what this blog is.
This is a blog by and for book readers and book lovers. And I admit that I am one of those book readers/lovers.
We occasionally just reflect on the developments of the day, or offer an opinion or two about different business issus. And we might occasionally refer to a non-business book or two. But primarily, this is a blog about business books.
Our blogging team is immersed in business books.
Karl Krayer and I (Randy Mayeux) have presented a minimum of two synopses of business books, each month, for over 11 years. You name the best seller, and we have probably read it and presented a synopsis of it. The Tipping Point; Good to Great; The Art of Innovation; Blink; Outliers; The World is Flat; Hot, Flat, and Crowded; Womenomics… – the list is long, and always growing.
Bob Morris is a frequent, frequent reviewer of business books (and a few other books) for Amazon.com, other sites, and for this blog.
And Cheryl Jensen and Sara Smith, after a significant career in the corporate world, now consult with companies, and for this blog they primarily share their insights from books related to women in business issues.

So this blog is a blog where you get the reflections of a pretty good group of book readers and book lovers. In addition, you can find many of the synopses of business books that Karl and I have presented over the years at our companion web site, with audio + handout, at 15minutebusinessbooks.com.
But primarily, this is a simple little blog. We talk about ideas – ideas that capture our imagination and make us think — from the best business books we can find. I hope you find it useful.
